HORTUS Fact #4 – The Garden Art

HORTUS includes a biodiverse garden integrated into its architecture. It is an inner courtyard filled with native plant species designed by internationally renowned landscape and garden artist Piet Oudolf. This green sanctuary regulates microclimate, enhances well-being, and establishes a rich sensory environment.

Oudolf’s oeuvre reads like a who’s who of extraordinary gardens: the High Line Park in New York, the Lurie Gardens in Chicago, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, the Giardino delle Vergini in Venice, the Country Cork Garden in Ireland, the gardens on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, and many more.

Known for his naturalistic planting style, Oudolf curated a palette of native and climate-resilient species for HORTUS that change with the seasons, offering year-round visual interest and biodiversity.

The master plan was developed in collaboration with Deltavormgroep and strives to keep it simple. The focus is on the garden and its planting, as well as accessibility for HORTUS tenants and visitors. Accessibility is facilitated by a small path through the hilly landscape. Regarding the planting, we didn’t start with a specific plant, but developed a community of plants that complement each other well and don’t overgrow each other. Given the rather shady location, this wasn’t entirely easy.

This garden concept reflects SENN’s Human Positive philosophy. In HORTUS, nature is not a backdrop, it is a central protagonist.

«The selected plants should not only be strong and resilient on their own, but also within the community.»
